Stretch limo safety tightened up

The popularity of stretch limousines has soared in recent yearsThe government is tightening controls on stretch limousines to make sure they meet safety and licensing standards.
The Department for Transport has published guidelines for operators to make sure their vehicles comply.
In June, the Department for Transport will introduce a tough new safety inspection regime.
There will be also pre-registration checks to make sure all new vehicles with more than eight passenger seats comply with the guidelines.
Extended limousines have become a popular feature of party nights out.

Numbers of stretch limos have tripled over past five years
15,000 on UK roads
4,000 carry more than eight revellers
But most of the vehicles come from the US, where different safety laws apply, and the Department for Transport admits some of the cars registered in the UK do not meet British standards.
The new guidelines will help limousine owners make sure their vehicles comply with regulations on weight, dimensions, turning circle, seating, brakes, tyres, doors, lamps and reflectors and glazing.
Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: "The popularity of stretched limousines has soared in Britain and we are determined to ensure that they are used safely.
"We all know that limousines are great for parties, but it is important that these vehicles meet the required construction standards and are properly licensed and registered.
"This new guidance will help operators to ensure that their vehicles can lawfully be used on our roads.
"In the summer we will also be introducing a strict pre-registration check to help make sure unsafe stretched limos are kept off our roads."

Digital tachograph & Speed limiter to be fitted to new Ford Expedition limo

Lancashire Limousines have anounced the 1st digital tacograph to be fitted to the Brand new Ford Expedition limousine. The first 2 tacho's will be fitted in February 2008. VOSA type approval is already in place for the interface used and we hope to make the installation ready for all operators of the Ford Excursion, Expedition and H2 & H3 hummer limos. Cost is estimated at £1,300 for the digital tacho and an aditional £250 for a speed limiter fitted at the same time. Both will carry appoved certification from a major digital tachograph manufacturer and VOSA as required by law. NLCA members will be notified of further information as it becomes available.

"Etiquette for the Chauffeur" is a fascinating journey into the dawn of chauffeuring and the chauffeur car hire business. These rules of chauffeurs were first offered as the "Chauffeur's Blue Book" in 1906. This is a gem of a book offering such chauffeuring snippets as:
"Your master's fun but your work Do not forget that though the car is your employer's hobby, or his sport, it is your business in life, and you are there to see that he gets the proper use and enjoyment of it."
Times may have changed but the sentiment still remains. You may be driving a mistress rather than a master now. It is probably not fun or a sport for your client. It could of course be a day out shopping or a day at the races, but what still holds true is that this is your business in life as a chauffeur car hire driver.
Chauffeur's manners
" You may recognise a brother chauffeur on a passing car and consider it the proper thing to wave your hand and shout a greeting at him. This is exceedingly wrong; a silent nod is all that is permissable."
Much of the book still applies to the modern chauffeur, such as the section on general conduct:
" Maintain an atittude of reserve about the car - of mystery if you like - with a discreet silence on your part instead of a lot of blustering talk about big-ends, half-time cams and differential pinions."
Again some of the terms may have changed but remember not to blabber about traction control, satellite navigation or the sound system...
